About finding an individual address

You can use address locators to find addresses in ArcMap. To use an address locator in ArcMap, it must be loaded into the ArcMap document. You don't need to load the reference data for an address locator into the ArcMap document, but doing so will give you a visual reference to help you choose an appropriate candidate for an address.

How to find an individual address

  1. Click the Find tool Find tool in ArcMap, then click the Addresses tab.
  2. Choose the address locator you want to use to find the address from the list.
  3. If the address locator you want to use does not appear in the list, you need to add it to the ArcMap document. Click the Browse button to browse for address locators to add to the document.
  4. Type the address components in the text boxes and click Find.
  5. Click Show all candidates to see all the candidates the address locator generated.
  6. By default, only the candidates that meet or exceed the minimum candidate score are shown.
  7. Click Options if you want to modify the geocoding settings that the address locator uses to find the address.
  8. Otherwise, skip to step 7.
  9. Modify the address locator's settings and click OK.
  10. Click Show Standardization if you want to change how the address locator standardized the address.
  11. Otherwise, skip to step 9.
  12. Change the address standardization by editing the values in the fields in the Edit Standardization dialog box.
  13. When you make edits in the Edit Standardization dialog box, the list of candidates is automatically updated.
  14. Right-click the candidate and click Flash to flash the location of the candidate.
  15. Right-click the candidate and click Zoom To to show the location of the candidate in a more detailed map.
  16. Right-click the candidate and click Pan To to pan the map to the geocoded point if the location is not on the current map extent.
  17. Right-click the candidate and click Create Bookmark to set a spatial bookmark for the candidate's location.
  18. Right-click the candidate and click Add Point to add a graphic point to the map at the candidate's location.
  19. Click Cancel to close the Find dialog box.

Tips

  • If your search results in too many or too few candidates, you can modify the geocoding settings that the address locator uses to find addresses. Modifying the geocoding settings in ArcMap does not change the address locator that you're using; only the settings that are used to find addresses in your ArcMap session are modified.
  • If your search returns no candidate or the wrong candidate, you may find that editing the standardized address will improve your results.
