About hiding and showing toolbars

In addition to the Main menu and the Standard toolbar, ESRI applications have other toolbars that contain commands to help you perform a group of related tasks. Both ArcCatalog and ArcMap allow you to hide or show toolbars from the toolbars list on the View menu or the Customize dialog box. A check mark next to the toolbar name indicates that it's visible. However, although it appears in the list, you can't hide the Main menu. After checking a toolbar in the list, the application displays it as a floating toolbar on the desktop. If the toolbar was previously turned on, it returns to its last position.

How to hide and show toolbars

Hiding and showing toolbars from the View menu

  1. Click View and point to Toolbars.
  2. Check a toolbar to show it.
  3. Uncheck a toolbar to hide it.

Tips

  • You can access the toolbars list without using the View menu. Simply right-click any toolbar or the status bar.
  • To quickly hide a floating toolbar, click its Close button.
  • Toolbar visibility and position information is only stored in the Normal template. Therefore, the toolbar environment from the previous session is restored when you restart the application. You cannot save toolbar visibility and position information in an ArcMap document.

Toggling toolbars from the Customize dialog box

  1. Click the Tools menu and click Customize.
  2. Click the Toolbars tab.
  3. Check a toolbar to show it.
  4. Uncheck a toolbar to hide it.
  5. Click Close.

Tips

  • To quickly hide a floating toolbar, click its Close button.
  • Toolbar visibility and position information is only stored in the Normal template. Therefore, the toolbar environment from the previous session is restored when you restart the application. You cannot save toolbar visibility and position information in an ArcMap document.
