Choose the data to be graphed

Segment 7 of 12

Top  Previous  Next

There are 5 steps to add an animated graph to an existing animation in ArcMap.
1) Choose the data to be graphed.
2) Create the graph.
3) Adjust the graph properties for an animation.
4) Attach the data to the Time Layer Track.
5) Play the animated graph.

In this segment you'll choose the data to be graphed.

You'll make an animated graph of State populations by decade to play along with the county animation. First you'll create a definiton query to only display states for which you have population data. In the State Population table the population for many states is listed as zero during the first half of the 1800s. This is because population figures only start being recorded for these states later in the 1800s.

To create the definition query, right-click the State Population layer and click Properties. Click the Definition Query tab and click the Query Builder button.

The query expression should be:
“Population” > 0

The graph you build won't be cluttered with extra columns for states with zero values.
