Create the graph

Segment 8 of 12

Top  Previous  Next

There are 5 steps to add an animated graph to an existing animation in ArcMap.
1) Choose the data to be graphed.
2) Create the graph.
3) Adjust the graph properties for an animation.
4) Attach the data to the Time Layer Track.
5) Play the animated graph.

In this segment you'll create the graph.

To create a graph, click Tools on the Main Menu, point to Graphs, then click Create. First choose a graph type. Click the Graph type drop-down arrow on the Create Graph Wizard and click Vertical Bar.

Next you choose the table that contains the data to graph. In this case it is the attribute table of the State Population layer. Click the Layer/Table drop-down arrow and click State Population.

Next you set the data that will be graphed on the y-axis. Click the Value field drop-down list and click Population to set this as the value for the y-axis.

Next you set the x-axis values. Click the X field drop-down arrow and click State_Name to set this as the value for the x-axis.

To show the State names in ascending order, click in the dropdown list beside the X field and click Ascending.

Set the X label field to State_Name, then uncheck Add to legend so the legend is not displayed in the graph. Click Next.

To give the graph a title, in the General graph properties frame, type “State Population” in the Title text box. Type “State Name” in the Title text box on the Bottom tab.

Click the Left tab and check that Population is set as the title for the Y Axis, then click Finish.

A graph is created displaying the total population values for each state through time. Once the graph is animated later in this exercise, you’ll be able to see the population value per state through each time stamp.
