Adjust the graph properties for an animation

Segment 9 of 12

Top  Previous  Next

There are 5 steps to add an animated graph to an existing animation in ArcMap.
1) Choose the data to be graphed.
2) Create the graph.
3) Adjust the graph properties for an animation.
4) Attach the data to the Time Layer Track.
5) Play the animated graph.

In this segment you'll adjust the graph properties for an animation.

Since you set a definition query of “Population” > 0, only those states with populations greater than zero will be displayed in the graph as it is animated. As time passes, more states will appear on the graph as their population is recorded. As more states appear, the graph’s x-axis will become crowded, and you won’t be able to read the names. You can rotate the state names to overcome this problem.

To rotate the x-axis labels, right-click the graph and click Advanced Properties. Expand Chart, then expand Axis and click Bottom Axis.

Click the Labels tab. On the labels page, click the Style tab, and increase the Angle value to 90 degrees. This rotates the graph’s x-labels so they take up less space.

You want the range of y-values in your graph to remain the same and not fluctuate depending on the data, so you’ll fix the maximum y-value. In the Editing tree on the left side of the Editing dialog box, click Left Axis.

Click the Scales tab, then on the Scales page click the Maximum tab and click Change. Type “34000000” in the Value text box and click OK.

Click Close on the Editing dialog box.

The graph is almost ready to animate. The labels now take up less space along the x-axis, and the y-axis is set so the data scale won't fluctuate with each time slide that gets displayed.
