The most typical application of the generalization tools is to clean up a classified image derived from a satellite or a scanned map. The second general use of the tools is for reducing the detail in a dataset that is not relevant to the ensuing analysis.
Below is a classified image derived from a satellite. Notice that there are many isolated small zones of data that are either misclassified or irrelevant to the analysis.
