The ArcGIS Explorer Options dialog's Flight Characteristics panel options represent the set of options that you can use to control the flight behavior of the application when flying point-to-point or following a route.
To display the Flight Characteristics panel, click the ArcGIS Explorer Button , then click the ArcGIS Explorer Options button and then click Flight Characteristics.

Flying Point-to-Point

When you navigate from one place to another, for example from a note representing the location of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on the East Coast of the United States to another note representing the location of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on the West Coast, you can set how the application depicts the change of location by using the Go To animation setting on the Common page of the ArcGIS Explorer Options dialog. If you've chosen the Fly option, you can refine the animation sequence that occurs by adjusting the Flying Point-to-Point settings. Use Point-to-point speed to control the speed with which the entire animation sequence is rendered and use Liftoff distance to control the altitude the animation depicts when "taking off" from a location; for example, if you set the liftoff distance to the highest setting, the animation will fly up into space before travelling to the target location, whereas at the lowest setting the animation will appear as if no altitude was achieved when starting the flight. Note that if the Go To animation setting is None, the Point-to-Point settings will have no effect. Use the Reset Defaults button to restore the settings to their original values.

Surface Avoidance

If you check Direct navigation when panning and flying to avoid the surface terrain, ArcGIS Explorer will prevent you from navigating below the surface of the globe in 3D Display mode; if you don't have sub-surface data and sub-surface elevation data, such as bathymetric data, this may provide a means of preventing undesired navigation.
