Release 9.3 E-mail This Topic Printable Version Give Us Feedback

There are two ways to create services. In Manager, these are described as Publish a GIS Resource and Add New Service. Choosing Publish a GIS Resource does the following things:

The following instructions explain how to use the "Publish a GIS Resource" option. For help with Add New Service see Adding a new service.

Note: When you choose "Publish a map, globe, or other GIS resource as a service" in Manager's Home tab, the Publish a GIS Resource wizard appears.

How to publish a GIS resource to the server using Manager

  1. Click the Services tab in Manager.
  2. Click Publish GIS Resource.
  3. Click the Resource Type drop-down arrow, click the service type, then click Browse.
  4. Depending on the Resource Type, click to browse either the Local File System, the ArcGIS Server File System or a resource within an ArcSDE Database.
  5. To publish a resource on the Local or ArcGIS Server File System, browse to the resource you want to publish or type its path. To publish a resource on an ArcSDE server, enter the database connection parameters.
  6. Optionally, change the default name of the service.
  7. Choose which folder the service will be published to. You can either specify an existing folder or create a new folder. Click Next.
  8. Choose the capabilities that you would like to enable. Depending on the type of the resource and the information it contains, you will see more or fewer available capabilities. Click Next.
  9. Review the information about the service that will be created.

  10. If you want to change any of the properties, you can click Previous to go back. Otherwise, click Finish to publish the resource.

How to publish a GIS resource to the server using ArcCatalog

  1. In the Catalog tree, navigate to the resource you want to publish. For example, navigate to a map document on disk.
  2. Right-click the resource and click Publish to ArcGIS Server.
  3. Choose which server you want to publish the resource to, type a name for the service, then choose the folder in which the service will reside. Click Next.
  4. Choose the capabilities you would like to enable for the resource and click Next. Different types of resources expose different types of capabilities. For a more complete explanation of each type of capability, see What types of services can you publish?
  5. Review the information about the service that will be created. If you will be working with the service through the Web, take special note of the service's URL. You can't enter this URL in a browser directly, but you can enter the URL and append ?wsdl to see the service's Web service definition and verify that the service is working correctly.

Note that multiple Web service endpoints can be created when you specify certain capabilities (for example, the KML capability for map services creates an additional endpoint suffixed KmlServer in addition to the default map service).
