Generating your first schematic diagram
About generating your first schematic diagram
You have created a schematic dataset containing a schematic diagram type that uses the default Standard Builder to generate schematic diagrams on the fly from any feature selection set or trace result in ArcMap. You can now generate your first schematic diagram in ArcMap.
How to generate your first schematic diagram
- Start ArcMap, point to File, and click Add Data.
The Add Data dialog box opens.
- Browse to a geodatabase that contains a geometric network, select it, and click Add.
For example, you can browse to the ElecDemo sample geodatabase that should have been copied in the C:\arcgis\ArcTutor\Schematics\Schematics folder during the Schematics installation process, select the ElectricNetwork geometric network, and click Add.
- Zoom in to a part of the geometric network and use the Select Features tool to select features.
- Click the Generate New Schematic Diagram button
.
The New Schematic Diagram dialog box opens.
- Click the Browse button to the right of the Schematic Dataset or Folder drop-down list and select the schematic dataset you created in STEP 1.
The Diagram Type drop-down list is automatically filled, and any schematic diagram type implemented in the selected schematic dataset is itemized in the list.
- Select the schematic diagram type you created in STEP 2.
Keep the [Create New Data Frame] default value for the Output Data Frame drop-down list so the generated schematic diagram is automatically displayed in a new data frame.
- Type a name in the Schematic Diagram Name field, for example, SchematicDiagram1.
- A set of features should be selected in your map, and the Selection Set In Data Frame option should be checked. If it's not, close the New Schematic Diagram dialog box, and repeat steps 3 through 7.
If the Selection Set In Data Frame option is checked, go to step 9.
- As feature sets can be currently selected in several data frames, select the input data frame which contains the selected features set from which the diagram will be generated. By default, the data frame in the Selection Set In Data Frame drop-down list is the active data frame.
The New Schematic Diagram dialog box opens.
- Click OK.
The Generating Diagram dialog box that sums up the schematic diagram process opens. At the end of the generation process, this dialog box closes, a new data frame is created in the TOC, and a schematic diagram containing the schematic elements associated with the selected set of features in ArcMap is displayed. The schematic elements are displayed according to their geographic positions.
- Right-click the data frame entry that contains the geometric network and point to Activate if you want to generate other schematic diagrams. Define a new selection set of features or use the tools on the Utility Network Analyst toolbar to define a trace result, and repeat steps 4 through 9.
NOTE: Generating diagrams while an edit session is open cannot operate when the related Schematics tables and the edited feature classes are in the same physical workspace (database) except when you are working on a SDE Geodatabase. When working on a personal or file Geodatabase, you must stop the edit session before generating any diagram.
