About adding the data you want to edit

Before you can edit features in ArcMap, you must add the data you want to edit to your map. ArcMap lets you edit data in shapefile or geodatabase format. Some formats can be imported into a geodatabase.

How to add the data you want to edit

1. Start ArcMap.
2. Click the Add Data button .
3. Navigate to the location of your data and click Add.
The data is added to your map.

Tips

You can stop the drawing process without clearing the map by pressing the Esc key. Unchecking the New Layer Visibility box allows you to add layers to the table of contents without having them automatically draw on the map. For example, if you are working with large datasets that may take a long time to draw, you may want to uncheck this box so when you add layers based on this data, you can set their properties before finally turning the layer on in the table of contents. The New Layer Visibility option is found by clicking the Tools menu, Options, then the General tab.
