Diagrams based on the Standard Builder or the Network Dataset Builder can not be generated or updated while an edit session is open when the related Schematics tables and the edited feature classes are in the same physical workspace (database) except when you are working on a SDE geodatabase.

Working with Schematics while an edit session is open on a personal or file geodatabase

When using a personal or file Geodatabase, if the schematic dataset is in the same database as the underlying feature classes, diagrams based on the Standard Builder or Network Dataset Builder can not be generated or updated. In this case, you must stop the edit session before generating or updating diagrams.

Working with Schematics while an edit session is open on a SDE geodatabase

Generating or updating diagrams managed by the Standard or Network Dataset builder while the Schematics physical workspace is being edited works with SDE. The only constraint with SDE concerns the editing on non versioned data (that is, when your Editing Options are set so the Edit a version of the database with the ability to undo and redo check box is unchecked in the Versioning tab). In this case, any newly generated diagram(s) or changes after updating diagram(s) will be stored in the schematic database only if the edit session is saved. When the edit session is closed without being saved, the diagram(s) generated or updated during the session will be lost.
