Use a geoprocessing tool to modify the way road symbol ends are drawn

In this example you will see how to use the Calculate Line Caps tool to change the line caps on road features. This tool is found in the Symbolization Refinement toolset.

The default end caps for line symbols give the lines rounded ends. This tool gives you two more options for terminating lines. Butt caps terminate line symbols with an open end at the end of the feature. Square caps terminate a line with closed, squared off ends half of the line symbol width beyond the end of the feature.

In this example you'll see how to create butt caps for the RoadL layer's features.

To do so, open the Calculate Line Caps tool and choose the RoadL layer for the Input Features With Representations parameter. Choose BUTT for the Cap Type parameter.

In this example you'll see the tool run with the True Dangle option. Click TRUE_DANGLE for the Dangle Option parameter, then click OK to run the tool.

True dangles are the ends of line features that do not connect to another line feature in the same feature class. A cul de sac or dead end street would be examples of road features with a dangle. For cartographic purposes it is sometimes desirable to create end caps at the transition between a double-line symbol or cased-line symbol and a single line symbol. These are called cased-line dangles. They might occur at a transition where a major road becomes a minor road.
