Now you will see how to modify the data’s symbology to indicate the passage of time as the data occurred. The Tracking Analyst extension allows you to set time specific symbology so your data will display differently depending on its temporal components. Using the Symbology tab in the ArcMap Layer Properties dialog box, you can change color, shape, size, and time ranges.

Check the box to show Events and the Time Window box. You can change the color or size of the events as they age in the playback.

You can change the Time Window, the duration of data that will be displayed during playback. In this example the Time Window is set to 14 days. Fourteen days worth of data will appear at a time during playback.

You can divide the Time Window into several Time Ranges. In this example the data will be shown as seven classes of two days each. You can change the color of these ranges to make them easier to distinguish.

When you finish, the layer is updated in the ArcMap table of contents. You can see the new time range categories there. The data will not display in the data frame until you play it back or choose a time to display with the Tracking Analyst Playback Manager.
