There are several controls that appear on the map to help you orient yourself and navigate. These include the Navigator, an on-screen control that can be set to control movement over the map; the Status Bar, an area at the bottom of the map display which includes a readout of the current coordinates and altitude from which the display is seen, as well as attribution information for each of the layers of the map; and the target indicator, crosshairs that indicate the target or center of the map display.

Orientation Indicator

By default the Navigator is located at the bottom left of the map display. You can use the Navigator Position control to change its placement to the top left of the map display or hide it entirely by selecting Off.

The Navigator has two modes: Indicator mode (a dynamic north arrow and angle of tilt indicator) and Navigation mode (a control you can manipulate directly to move to places, change your viewing angle and orientation, and zoom in and out). Selecting Use for navigation allows you to use the Navigator in Navigation mode by hovering the mouse over it and manipulating its controls, whereas unchecking Use for navigation disables that capability and places the Navigator in Indicator mode.

Toggling the check mark of the Show Tooltips checkbox controls the appearance of onscreen hints about the elements of the control.

Position Information

Toggling on or off the checkbox associated with each element controls whether or not it is visible. The items whose visibility you can control are the position information (coordinates and altitude), the target indicator, and whether or not the application indicates when the computer is disconnected from the Internet.

If Show connection status is checked, then status text will be shown in the upper right of the display indicating when the connection is broken. This will be useful if you suspect that there are internet connection issues. Note that it is not recommended that you use this setting if you are behind a firewall or if you are restricted from connecting to ArcGIS Online as the status will always be reported as being disconnected.
