The ArcGIS Explorer Options dialog's Navigation page options allow you to control the speed with which you navigate over the map using the mouse, the keyboard, or the Navigator control. In addition, the page provides options that allow you to control the behavior of the mouse in the application.
To display the Navigation page, click the ArcGIS Explorer Button , then click the ArcGIS Explorer Options button and then click Navigation.
In addition to your computer's keyboard and the navigation control on the map display, you can use a mouse or other hardware devices to navigate in ArcGIS Explorer. The Navigation page provides options for controlling conventional mouse devices that have two buttons and ideally, a mouse wheel. The options control the application's behavior when using the mouse to pan, fly over the surface, or zoom in or out on the map. The navigation speed setting also applies to the keyboard and the Navigator control.
When you navigate with the mouse or other hardware devices, the keyboard, or the Navigator control, one of operations you're likely to perform is to fly over the map, either with the map tilted to some extent in 3D or looking directly down from above in 2D and also in 3D. The navigation speed setting controls the speed with which your flight over the map is rendered. For example, you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard, the right mouse button on the mouse or one one of the cardinal locations of the Navigator control. This setting also controls the speed with which you zoom in or out with the mouse wheel.
Top of PageLeft button pan The polar pan option rotates the globe around the polar axis whereas the trackball pan is completely free in its rotation. The main differences are that polar pan preserves your current compass bearing, but is difficult to control near the poles, whereas trackball pan is easy to control near the poles but doesn’t preserve the current bearing. You only really see these effects when zoomed out from the globe to near full extent.
Top of PageGesture sensitivity If you check the Enable mouse gesture check box you turn on the ability to set drifting over the globe in motion by gesturing. In this case, a gesture constitutes a rapid throw-like movement of the mouse away from the desired direction of flight; in other words, to drift westward, gesture eastward. You can also set the sensitivity of the gesture by controlling the distance you need to throw the mouse to initiate drifting.
If you hold the Shift button down while gesturing, the path of flight will be a polar spin – that is, rotation about a line of latitude.
Top of PageForward mouse wheel navigation If your mouse has a mouse wheel, you can change this option to control the behavior of the application when you move the mouse wheel forward. Depending on your setting, the map will either zoom in or out when you move the mouse wheel forward.
Top of PageIf you have a 3D navigation device such as as a 3D Connexion SpaceNavigator™ device, you can enable it for use with ArcGIS Explorer by checking the checkbox in the 3D Navigation section. Use the device's configuration Wizard to configure your preferences.
