You can add a link to the Contents window to help augment the map's content by providing an easy way for readers of your map to access information that is relevant to the map but may not be inherently geographic or be of a content type that can be added directly to ArcGIS Explorer; for example, you can add a link to a spreadsheet that presents sales figures and charts for a region, a link to a word processing document that describes the project, a link to a web site, a diagram or picture, or even another application, etc. If the reader has the application that the link refers to, the file will open in that application.
The following table summarizes the actions you can perform on a link; the controls are present on the Tools tab and/or on the context menu that appears when you right-click a link.

Go To | Navigate to the folder's view if it exists. |
Open | Open the file referred to in the link in the appropriate application. |
Share | Share the link as a Map Content file (.nmc) |
Send a copy of the current link as an attachment to an e-mail message. | |
Remove | Remove the link and its contents. Note that you can't undo this operation. |
Rename | Select the link's name for editing. |
Move to Folder | Move the link to a folder. |
Set Default View | Associate the current view with the link. |
Properties | Display the Link Properties dialog, in which you can set the link's view. |
