About loading features or records
Note: This topic was updated for 9.3.1.
You can load records into an existing feature class or table by loading them from an XML recordset document with ArcCatalog or ArcMap.
How to load features or records
Loading with ArcCatalog
In the ArcCatalog tree, right-click the feature class or table into which you want to load data and point to Load.
Click Load XML Recordset Document.
Navigate to the XML recordset document from which you want to load data. You can load from an XML, ZIP, or Z file type.
Click Next.
Click the drop-down arrow in the Matching Source Field list and click the field from the recordset document that you want to match to the target field.
Leave the Matching Source Field as <None> if you don’t want data from a field in the recordset document to be loaded into the target data.
Repeat step 5 until you have matched all the fields you want to load from the recordset document.
Click Finish to load the data.
Adding the Load XML Recordset Document command to ArcMap
Click View, point to Toolbars, and click Customize.
Click the Commands tab.
In the Categories list, click XML Support.
In the Commands list, click and drag the Load XML Recordset Document command and drop it onto the Editor toolbar.
The command appears on the toolbar.
Click Close.
Loading with ArcMap
Add the feature class or table into which you want to load data to ArcMap, click Editor, then click Start Editing.
Click the Target layer drop-down arrow and click the feature class or subtype into which you want to load data.
Click the Load XML Recordset Document command.
Navigate to the XML recordset document from which you want to load data. You can load from an XML, ZIP, or Z file type.
Click Next.
Click the drop-down arrow in the Matching Source Field list and click the field from the recordset document that you want to match to the target field.
Leave the Matching Source Field as <None> if you don’t want data from a field in the recordset document to be loaded into the target data.
Repeat step 6 until you have matched all the fields you want to load from the recordset document.
