Installing ArcGIS Mobile

Installation of the ArcGIS Mobile application is accomplished by first copying the application install file to your Windows Mobile device and tapping on it to run the install. There are several ways that you can copy the install file (ArcGISMobile.CAB) to your device:

• Using a web browser on your Windows Mobile device
• Using a desktop connection to your Windows Mobile device
• Using a third party deployment system

If you are using a web browser, you can download the application from the web page located on the web server that mobile projects are created on. To access the web page, type http://<server_name>/arcgis/mobile in the URL of the web browser. There you will find a link that you can click to download the application CAB.

If you are using a desktop connection either with Microsoft ActiveSync for Windows XP and Windows Server or Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Vista, you can directly copy the CAB file to your device. The CAB file is located on the web server at the following location (C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ArcGIS\Mobile\Software).

The ArcGISMobile.CAB file contains both the application executable and additional components (.dlls) that both the ArcGIS Mobile Application and custom applications developed using the Mobile SDK require. Before starting the install, please ensure that your mobile device meets the system requirements outlined in the ArcGIS Server System Requirements specification.

Use the following steps to install the application on your device:

1. Open the file browser on the device and navigate to where you have copied the CAB file. You can place the CAB file anywhere on the mobile device or on a storage card inserted into the device. Note that you cannot run the CAB installer from a Windows XP or Windows Vista machine.

   

2. Tap the CAB file with your stylus or highlight the CAB file and press down on the rocker to start the installation.

3. You will be asked to choose where you would like to install the application (on the device or on a storage card). You can install the ArcGIS Mobile application on any storage mechanism on the device. However, if you consider installing onto a storage card, consider how the storage card will be used an if the card is dedicated to use with the mobile device.

   

4. Once the application is installed, you can press Ok to finish the application install process and start the install for the runtime components. If you have already installed the runtime in support of a custom application developed using the ArcGIS Mobile SDK, you will be prompted to remove the existing runtime or cancel the installation. It is important to note that canceling the install of the runtime will leave the successful install of the ArcGIS Mobile application on the device. This will not be an issue if the version of the installed runtime is the same as the version inside the application CAB file.

   

5. Once the install is complete, press Ok to finish.

When the install of the application is complete, a new entry will appear in the Programs Group titled ArcGIS Mobile. Tap on it to start the ArcGIS Mobile application.
