About migrating

ArcSDE geodatabases licensed through ArcGIS Server Enterprise have more capabilities than those licensed through ArcGIS Server Workgroup, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, or any of the single-user geodatabases. If you find you need the following functionality, it is time to move to an ArcSDE geodatabase licensed through ArcGIS Server Enterprise, which allows the following:

How to migrate to an ArcSDE Enterprise geodatabase

Migrate from a file or personal geodatabase

  1. In the Catalog tree, click the personal or file geodatabase from which you want to migrate.
  2. On the Contents tab, while holding down the Shift key, click the first data item and the last data item to select all objects in the list.
  3. Right-click one of the selected items and click Copy.
  4. Connect to the ArcSDE geodatabase to which you want to migrate by adding a spatial database connection.
  5. For instructions on connecting to an ArcSDE geodatabase in ArcCatalog, see Creating spatial database connections, which can be found in the "Data management with ArcCatalog" section of the help.

  6. Right-click the ArcSDE geodatabase to which you want to migrate and click Paste.
  7. On the Data Transfer dialog box, confirm that all the data items you want to migrate are listed.
  8. If you want to specify a different configuration keyword for any of the incoming data items, click the Config Keyword field you want to change. From the pull-down list, choose a new configuration keyword. Repeat for all other items for which you want to change the configuration keyword.
  9. For information on configuration keywords, see DBTUNE configuration keywords.

  10. Click OK.

Tip

  • When you paste data into an ArcSDE geodatabase, it will be owned by (stored in the schema of) the user specified on the Database Connection Properties dialog box.
