expand/collapse item About the Java Standard and Custom Viewers

If you are viewing an ArcIMS site, you may be using one of two types of Java Viewers, the Java Standard or the Java Custom. Both viewers have the same functionality, although the presentation differs.

Using the Java Standard Viewer

The Java Standard Viewer has a map display area, title, toolbar, legend, scale bar, and overview map. The legend lists the layers with their symbology, and you make a layer active by clicking it in the legend. Change the visibility of a layer by checking or unchecking the check box beside it.

Java Standard Viewer

The toolbar appears above the map display area. It includes a standard set of tools. If an Image or Feature Service does not support the functionality associated with a particular tool, it is unavailable. In some cases, a tool is unavailable until you have used another tool. For example, the Buffer tool is unavailable until you have selected features, and the Next Extent button is unavailable until you have used the Previous Extent tool. The toolbar also has two buttons unique to the Java Standard Viewer: the Viewer Elements button, which lets you add or remove the overview map, legend, and scale bar; and the Cancel Data Retrieval button, which cancels a request sent to the ArcIMS Spatial Server. See Using the Java Viewer toolbar for more information about each tool.

Using the Java Custom Viewer

The Java Custom Viewer has the same elements as the Java Standard Viewer: a map display area, title, toolbar, legend, scale bar, and overview map. The primary differences are the organization of the elements and the contents of the toolbar.

Java Custom Viewer

The tool bar is to the left of, rather than above, the map display area. The legend is to the right of the map display area and the overview map appears above it rather than below it.

The toolbar contains only the tools you specified when you designed your Web site. It does not include the Viewer Elements and Cancel Data Retrieval buttons found on the Java Standard Viewer toolbar. Also, instead of a Pan One Direction button, the Java Custom Viewer has four separate button for panning north, south, east, and west. Instead of a single Select Features tool, the Java Custom Viewer has four tools: Select by Rectangle, Select by Circle, Select by Line, and Select by Polygon. See Using the Java Viewer toolbar for more information about each tool.
