Create a data package for a published map

ArcGIS Publisher

Segment 8 of 8

Top  Previous  Next

You can package the data for a specific area within a published map.

You may want to share your published map with someone who does not have access to your data. Creating a data package for your published map allows you to easily distribute the map and data. You can limit the amount of data that you distribute by zooming in to the area needed by the the person to whom you'll give the map and data, and then only including the data that intersects the data frame when you package the data.

In this segment you'll see the second part of the process, creating a data package that includes only the data for the extent of the published map's data frame.

You can create a data package for a published map in ArcMap or in ArcCatalog. This example shows how to do it in ArcCatalog.

In ArcCatalog create a new folder that will hold the published map and its associated data package. In this example the folder is named “PEI Package.” The data package and published map linked to the packgage will be placed in this folder. You can give this folder to anyone with ArcReader and they will be able to view the published map of this extent.

Navigate to the published map, right-click the published map, and click Create Data Package.

Note: If the Create Data Package command is disabled, check to see that the Publisher extension has been enabled in ArcCatalog.

Click the General tab, then click the Browse button. Browse to the folder you created to hold the data package, and click OK.

When creating a data package, you can choose the output data format as well as whether to include all or a portion of the data used in the map. For this data package you will see how to package shapefile data that intersects the extent of the data frame.

Click the Extent tab, and in the Vector options, click Include features that intersect the data frame(s).

If you wanted the data package to include all of the data from the original map, you could use the other opion, to Include all features in the data set.

If the map contains raster data, you can choose whether to clip the raster to the extent of the data frame or to include the whole raster in the data package.

Click OK to create the data package.

If you navigate to the folder you created for the data package in ArcCatalog (PEI Package, in this example) you will see a folder that contains the packaged data and a folder that contains a new published map that references this data package. You can now give the container (PEI Package) folder to any ArcReader user who wants to view your map.
