Before you begin, you must enable the Geostatistical Analyst extension. To do so, in ArcMap, click Tools, click Extensions, then check Geostatistical Analyst. Click Close.

To add the tutorial data to ArcMap, click the Add Data button on the Standard toolbar. Navigate to the folder where you installed the tutorial data (the default installation path is C:\ArcGIS\ArcTutor\ Geostatistics), hold down the Ctrl key, then click and highlight the ca_ozone_pts and ca_outline datasets. Click Add. Click the ca_outline layer legend in the table of contents to open the Symbol Selector dialog box. Click the Fill Color drop-down arrow and click No Color.

Finally, add the Geostatistical Analyst toolbar to ArcMap. Click View, point to Toolbars, then click Geostatistical Analyst.

The ozone dataset (ca_ozone_pts) represents the 1996 maximum eight-hour average concentration of ozone in parts per million (ppm). The measurements were taken hourly and grouped into eight-hour blocks. The original data has been modified for the purpose of the tutorial and should not be considered accurate data.
