Layout view allows you to see the map on a virtual page. The layers of data appear in a data frame on the vitrual page. Data frames are a way of organizing the layers you want to see together on a map.

In Layout view you can change the shape and position of the data frame on the page; add other map elements, such as scalebars and legends, to the map; and change the page size and orientation.
