You can add marker symbols to polygon or line representation rules. In this example you'll see how to add a marker symbol that will be randomly distributed within the polygons.

To do so, open the layer properties for layer (in this example, WetlandsA_Rep) and click the representation rule that you want to add marker symbols to (in this example the Swamp representation rule). Click the Add new marker layer button. Click the default square marker to open the Marker Selector dialog box. Click a symbol (in this example it is the Swamp symbol) from the Representation Marker Selector dialog box. Click OK to close the Representation Marker Selector dialog box, and type a size for the symbol in the Size text.

The default marker placement location is Polygon center. This adds one marker at the center of the polygon. You will see how to change the marker placement to put a series of markers across the polygon. Open the Marker Placements dialog box by clicking the arrow next to the placement label. Locate the Polygon input category and choose Randomly inside polygon. Click OK to close the Marker Placements dialog box, and click OK to close the Layer Properties dialog box.

The symbols are distributed randomly across the polygons.
