The default name for a layer is the name of the shapefile, image, or ArcSDE layer. If you add several layers with the same name, Author will append a number at the end. You can change the name of the layer to make the name more friendly to your users. You may use any alphanumeric characters in the layer name as well as spaces. The name should be descriptive, but if it is too long, it may be hard to read in the ArcIMS viewers.
