Getting started with ArcIMS Designer expand/collapse all

expand/collapse item About using ArcIMS Designer

ArcIMS Designer is a wizard-driven application that guides you through the Web site design process. Once you have authored a map and published it as an Image, Feature, or ArcMap Image Service, you need to build a Web site, or viewer, for it. The core of an ArcIMS Web site consists of one or more services, but it may also contain a legend, tools for navigating the map, a scale bar, and an overview map.

Designer outputs three viewers:

Designer consists of a series of panels you see depending on the choices you make. Some panels appear only if you have selected a particular viewer. Others appear only if you have included a Feature Service in your Web site. Most panels do not appear if you choose the Java Standard Viewer because it does not allow customization.

These viewers output from Designer can be used as-is, or you can customize them. Customizing the viewers is covered in Customizing the HTML Viewer and Customizing the Java Viewer.

expand/collapse item Starting Designer

  1. Before you can use Desginer, the services you plan to include in your Web site should be running. For more information, see Starting, stopping, and removing services.
  2. Open Designer.

Windows: Click Start | Programs | ArcGIS | ArcIMS | Designer.
UNIX or Linux: Type aimsdesigner at the prompt.

The Create a Web Site panel displays.

  3. Type a name for the Web site directory.

The Web site directory is where Web site files are stored. By default, it is a subdirectory of the 'Website' directory created during installation.

Your Web site directory is also the directory to point to when you want to access your Web site. For example, if you named your computer "mycomputer" and named the Web site directory "SanFrancisco", then your site is accessible by typing:

    http://mycomputer/Website/SanFrancisco
  4. Type a title for the Web page.

The title appears in the title bar of the Web browser when your Web site is accessed.

  5. Click Next.
